A quote, a thing desired.

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 4:14 PM
"But the third class is of those who can say like St. Paul that for them 'to live is Christ'. These people have got rid of the tiresome business of adjusting the rival claims of Self and God by the simple expedient of rejecting the claims of Self altogether.... The will of Christ no longer limits theirs; it is theirs. All their time, in belonging to Him, belongs to them, for they are His."

Bad News Dudes

Goddamn you illness.

And also, sadly, I have to make a major epic life change. No more being vegetarian. It is seriously fricking up my health. Big time. I haven't eaten meat properly since I was eleven. And now I guess my body has had enough of it and decided to tell me. Uunngg. Well, after a long lecture from mother dearest and insider information from Becky Brown (works at Hollands and Barratts and may get promoted to Life Guru idk) I have come up with a compromise. No eating pigs or cows. Never ever again. But since I eat fish... then chicken is okay, right? Idk. I don't want to eat any of it at all, but I have had just about enough of being consistently ill. My mum says it's 'cause I don't have a balanced diet but tbh living in this backwards village it's hard enough to have a balanced grip on society never mind protein substitutes.

I am not happy about this Torchwood series 4 without John Barrowman by the way.

Although I am completely full up with win at the BBC's efforts this Christmas. It owns last years. Hamlet on Boxing Day! Meaning I am going to introduce my brother to Shakespeare whether he likes it or not, running commentary and all. His only knowledge of Shakespeare comes from the fact that he was in Doctor Who one time, and that Shakespeare-related things are strictly banned from the house when mother dearest is home. Well, seeing as mother dearest is working on that day - therefore, aged 17 years and 364 days, I will be in charge of the TV thank you very muchly.

I've almost finished my novel. Only four years late. Yay.

Lots more snow today. Which means there are no buses to civilisation. And which also means that there was a ritual snowball fight with the entire street, me excluded seeing as I am ill. My brother would do well as an entrepreneur; he made money clearing snow off people's gardens. Then spent the money on sugary goods. Fail.

IT MAY SNOW ON MY BIRTHDAY! THIS IS WIN!

WHO CARES ABOUT A WHITE CHRISTMAS?!

I WANT A WHITE 18TH (:

I hope someone can help me with this, because I can't find this information anywhere. I'm writing a Harry Potter fanfic and Harry is going to go back into the muggle world after his 7th year to become a pilot in the RAF. But, he hasn't been to muggle school since he was 10. So, here are my questions:

1. The RAF requires 2 A-levels and 5 GCSE's higher than a C, including English language and math. Does that mean that the two A-levels are the same as 2 of the GCSE's and what subjects (beside English language and math) would be good picks for this career track?

2. Since he hasn't been to school since he was 10, what is the best way to get caught up?

3. How long would it take him to get these qualifications if he takes as short a time as possible, but still be realistic?

I've searched on the internet already, but the closest I could get to this kind of info was this page: http://www.ahomeeducation.co.uk/ and that's really not what I was looking for. So I hope someone here can help me.

double knitting - edges?

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Hey knitters,

First off, thank you all for your suggestions about making stockinette-looking earflaps lie flat! I've decided to try double knitting. I've been playing around with it for a few days and I like it, but I'd like to make the edges of it one color. I searched around a bit and the only thing I came up with was to start each row with "simple double knitting" (k1, s1) in the color I want the edge to be. Okay, using just the one color at the edge makes sense. But what about the ends of the rows - should I do the last two stitches in just the one color as well? And what's this s1 thing - I've just been knitting and purling, not slipping any stitches. Should I be?

So basically my question is: If you wanted to make a double knit project with the edges all one color, how would you do it?

Thanks so much!

Joanns yarn question

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 9:34 AM
Perhaps a stupidly simple question - I just found out that my dad wants a cowl like I made last year for him, only this time in brown. I don't have to have it done until New Year's, but I don't think that I'll have time to do what I did last year - buy "bare" superwash wool yarn from KnitPicks and dye it, then knit it up. I really like the way "Bare" holds up, though, and the fact that it is washable.

The nearest LYS I know about is about 40 minutes away, so that won't work right now. I do have a Joanns ETC nearby - does anyone know of any comparable washable wool brands at Joanns that will hold up? I'm worried I'll buy some brand I've never used and it will pill like crazy when washed.

A Matryoshka Holiday

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Taking directions from this website, I decided to make matryoshka (Russian nesting doll) holiday greeting cards this year.

First, I created a template (they also provide one on the linked website) and cut out a bunch of oulines on patterned cardstock (it was pretty difficult to find this, but I found some books of it at Michael's. I also did okay with some patterned paper which was stiffer than regular paper but not quite cardstock).

hey all! just wondering if PearlEx pigments are essentially the same as micas you can get from Coastal Scents, TKB Trading, etc.

I've never bought any PearlEx so I'm not sure if it's pure mica, or if it has some specific carrier/binder/filler that makes it more suited to various artistic applications.

Has anyone used cosmetic micas from TKB, etc., for their crafts/art?

Looking for patterns

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 3:06 AM
So I'm looking for a pattern for a gecko or a rhino. I can't afford to buy one, so I was wondering if anybody has one? I've looked online quite extensively and not found one I really like for free. (It's a gift for a friend of mine that really doesn't like the goofy anthropomorphized animals with clothes kind of thing, or really goofy anything, so that restricts my searches more than anything.) Also this would be the second thing I've ever done at all, and the first thing I've ever done without a more experience crocheter watching my every stitch. x.x; If I was more experienced I'd feel more comfortable just making it up as I went along, but I don't even yet have much confidence just in the doing stitches right. And my crochet goddess is in another state until January, so.. I really like the look of this gecko. I think he'd like it a lot. Also, there's the rhino that I think he'd think is adorable. Does anybody have any patterns, or know any websites that would have patterns, that look similar to either of these? Lizard/geckos and rhinos are his favorite animals, so I'm trying to find those. Help? j-j

I haven't updated in a while, I know. Figured it was past due time. So I'm lazy, sue me. My thoughts are kind of all over the place so I'll just write a list to try and organize them.

Joe: We've been really good lately. I feel like I hardly ever see him, but it makes the time we have together that much better. He's been on a cooking streak lately, which is fine with me - he's made these totally AWESOME beef pastie thingies, and cookies that I can't stop eating. Maybe he's sneaking crack into them.

Luna: is doing excellently. She got spayed last week and I had a few relaxing days where she slept most of the time, but she's back in action. Her most recent problem is the fact that she's drinking out of the Christmas  tree stand, even though her water bowl is filled with fresh water. I don't understand it. Perhaps she enjoys the light pine flavoring. Either way, she's going on six months now and I love her to death.

Work: Is kind of growing on me, and I'm getting scared. I've got a few regular customers that I've actually developed decent acquaintanceship's with, and we talk a bit when they come in. One particular girl might actually graduate to 'friend', as we spent a good ten minutes talking about why we're so depressed that it's almost 2010, and how sad we are that our families are across the country during the holidays. There was also a regular of mine that I just found out today lived in Manayunk for a bit of time, which made me squee, especially since we bonded over being Phillies/Eagles fans in a land of Cowboys fans. However, apart from the customers, the rest of the job makes me want to strangle people. I'm supposed to be part-time, but I'm working just as many hours if not more than my full-time counterparts. I've been working 39 hours a week lately, which doesn't bother me that much, but it would be nice if I got the associated benefits/vacation time. It also bothers me that I usually end up doing the majority of the work when I close, which can include checking in and putting away the entire grocery order. Also on the flip side of my  good customers are my bad ones. I can say right now that I'm getting extremely tired of being hit on, especially when I make it very clear that I am married and not interested in being otherwise. I also have a very low tolerance for stupidity and rudeness, which isn't always a good thing in a job where I am constantly treated as either invisible or an imbecile.

But! There is a bright spot on the horizon. I recently applied to the Corpus Christi Police Department as a police dispatcher, and it's looking like I might get the job. I was a bit ambivalent about it for a bit, but after talking with Joe and C., I've started getting excited about it. I talked with C. about it for a while after freaking out over the job description, but he told me that it's not as complicated as it looks. Anyway, so they called me a few weeks after I took the test and went over my 50-page background packet, and they should be calling me soon for a panel interview HOPE HOPE HOPE. Not only would it be an immense pay raise, but I have a feeling that I'm going to love doing it.

So that's about it for the moment. Still not sure what my schedule is looking like for Christmas, unfortunately, but I'm 99.999% sure I'll be working. Oh well, it's 2x pay.

Also, since I probably won't update again until January, HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

ALSO - and you know who you are - I MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY and I love you.

One method of weaving in ends.

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
I was weaving in ends and thought I would take some pictures of my favorite way to do it, and share.

Once I have woven through the backs of several stitches with a blunt needle, I like to separate the yarn into segments of 1-2 plies, and weave the remainder in with a sharp needle, splitting through stitches as I go. This really locks the tail down, and I usually can't figure out where the ends are.

Working at Writing

  • Dec. 19th, 2009 at 9:42 PM

My brain has been tied up with writing for the past two days. I have this essay which I intend to submit to a contest. The deadline is Dec 31st and the essay is not ready yet. I’ve known about the contest since last spring, but it was only in November that I found the right stories and concepts for the essay. I wrote a draft in early December, but yesterday I had one of those moments where I could see how the ideas were right but the presentation was all wrong. The insight was due to some good feedback from an alpha reader. Many thanks are due there.

My original draft told the story. My new draft is wrapping the concepts around scenes of the story. I am attempting to show rather than tell. This proves difficult because the scenes have to be from my own relevant experiences. There is only a limited amount of rearranging I am allowed to do for narrative convenience. The line between creative nonfiction and complete fabrication is narrow. I keep re-writing and re-adjusting as I go; trying to find the right arrangements of words to communicate the ideas. Even as I forge forward toward a complete draft, I am aware that there are errors I am missing. I’m going to have to go back through the whole thing to check for tense drift. I simply can’t focus properly on tense matching while I’m working on structure.

Writing this essay has been hard. I haven’t had a writing experience this intensive since I wrote the story to submit for a DAW anthology in 2007. Part of it is writing to a deadline and really wanting the work to be my best. Another part of the intensity is the subject matter. I really care about what I am trying to say. This effort is forcing me to push deeper and write longer than I usually do. I am learning a lot from the experience. Naturally I hope that the essay is accepted and published as the DAW story was. However, even if it is not I will still have succeeded.
